W.A. STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RETRIEVING TRIAL
DATE: SEPTEMBER 20/21, 2008
VENUE: RURAL TENNIS CAMPS, CROSSMAN
JUDGE: MRS GLENICE McCLURE

The State Champs were held once again at the popular tennis camps site, only an hour from the metro area, and an easy drive for most competitors. Eighteen dogs were entered, but with four scratchings this was reduced to 14 competing dogs. The weather was mild on the Saturday, although cloud threatened at times. The first run, a doublefall, with a very, very narrow line between retrieves saw the demise of five dogs. A disappointing start to the trial !!!
The second run was a double blind, both rabbits and one long with the dog going out of sight for part of it, and the other shorter, and a mark between the two blinds. Two more dogs were lost on this run.
After lunch, run three was held amongst rocks and trees, this time a double mark with a short mark thrown right to left across the facing dog, and a very long mark deep in a paddock, falling just out of the dogs sight. Pickup of course was long bird, short bird. All seven remaining dogs completed this retrieve to continue on to the fourth and last run for the day. This was a double mark with a doublerise on the first. Dogs and handlers were in a deep gully and the first mark was thrown away and landing in a large dam. The doublerise was being placed behind the area of the first fall, on a spit of land. The second mark was to the right of the dam at the end of the gully, and easy for the dog to switch to without being seen. Only one dog failed to complete the task. So going into Day two there were six dogs left, with Guinness and Glory (Maggie Hankinson) and Swaggy (Kerry Webster) being the leading dogs. The other dogs making it through to day two were Judy Pannett and Josh, Laurelle Draper and Inca, and Ellie Johnson and her Brittany Indi.
Day two's weather threatened rain, but held off for the 5th run, a triple mark, but just as the sixth run started the rain and strong winds came in soaking everyone and making conditions very unpleasant. The first two dogs, Guinness and Swaggy bore the brunt of the worst weather unfortunately, with the conditions easing for the others. The final run on the large dam was a mark, two bird, and channel swim blind. A nono bird was also placed at the site of the fall of the mark after it was picked up. This of course was not to be retrieved. I am pleased to say that all six dogs completed this final run of the Championships. Although a very cold finish to the trial, plenty of people stayed for the presentations.
