JUDGES REPORT

2007 QLD STATE RETRIEVING TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

27 Entries
26 Starters

6 Runs all triple retrieves

Entries included 18 Labradors, 3 GSP’s, 2 Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and 1 each of English Springer Spaniel, Flat Coated Retriever, Golden Retriever and Weimeraner.

Run1

Double Rise and two bird involving a double angle crossing of a steep dry creek bed. Two bird was cast while dog was returning with the first leg of the double rise. I was looking for a dog who could handle the terrain and not get lost in the “maze” of gullies on both legs of the double rise while not getting sucked onto the two bird at the wrong time. Most dogs did not handle this run well with dogs often needing to be handled on several legs. Scores ranged between 8 and 47. High scoring dogs included Georgina Golle and Buzz, Jacky Duffy and Doc and Malcolm Tyrie with Tess. 5 dogs failed to complete this run

Run 2

Land run made up with a Single walk up and double mark. Handler could select pick up order of the two marks as long as the short walk up bird was collected last. I was looking for strong marking on the two long marks and a willingness to not overrun the short memory testing walk-up. The dogs seemed to suddenly get their marking eyes in after the poor display on the first run and a lot of dogs did some really nice work. The highlight was 53 points from Jack Lynch and Fern followed by 48 points for Dom Colasimone and Ace. 4 dogs failed to complete this run.

Run 3

Double blind and Mark. First blind involved angle entry into a point of water with firing point set some 40 odd meters from the waters edge decoys were placed on the right shore line with the mark landing not far from the left shore line. The second blind was in the opposite direction and required tight control in order to stay online. Handlers were instructed that the dogs must stay online and not cheat the water in order to remain in the trial. Although most took several handles to get started in the water the general standard was quite high. Some handlers elected to skirt the gully on the second blind and paid the penalty on the score sheet for not facing the test. 5 dogs failed this test with high scoring runs posted by Joe Vella and Blackie, Georgina and Buzz and Jack and Fern.

At the end of Day one, 12 dogs were left. Equal leading dogs were Jack and Fern and Georgina and Buzz on127 points close behind were Joe and Blackie and Malcolm and Tess both on 122.

Run 4

Double fall with both birds being thrown from land into water left to right as the handlers viewed the run. The second bird actually fell beyond the first by about 40 meter. The blind was run in the opposite direction but required a remote angle entry into water with the dog out of site at the time of entry to water due to the steep banks. Unfortunately some poor handling resulted in 5 dogs failing this run. Dogs that got out on the right hand bank during the double fall payed a heavy price with a very difficult re entry into the water to get the birds. High score were again posted by Georgina, Jack and Joe.
Leading dogs was now Georgina on 172 followed by Jack 170 and Joe 168.

Run 5

Double blind requiring tight control over a long distance with a memory mark picked up last which landed in water. All the dogs performed well on this run with only 6 points separating the remaining 5 dogs. However the run was top scored by Joe and Blackie.
At the end of run 5 Joe and Georgina were equal on 209 with Jack on 206.

Run 6
Double mark and blind in the middle. Left mark was on land blind was in water with a very difficult angled entry requiring extreme control to remain online. Memory mark to the left was across water at about 40 meters and landed at 150 meters in a steep gully.
High scoring run was Joe and Blackie with Jack and Fern not far behind. Unfortunately for Georgina, Buzz struggled on the last run, the long distances covered over the weekend appearing to take its toll on the little Springer.

Hi Gareth

Nice to read such a comprehensive report on the trial and a run down on how the dogs went during the competition especially for a State Championship.

Cheers

Anna

Dear Gareth
I have just realised in your report that my Springer Spaniel has turned into a Lab.
I don't know what to do about the spots, the height for the hair.

Regards, Georgina
