Golden Retriever Club W.A. Novice & Restricted Results

The Golden Retriever Club of W.A. held their first retrieving trials in over 13 years on Sunday May 23rd. Efforts to make the Novice and Restricted stake a success were rewarded by a good entry of dogs and enthusiastic handlers and spectators. A brand new site in Gidgegannup was found for the event, and although it was cold and overcast, only an occasional shower fell during the day. It was great to have the property owners and their friends spectate the two stakes for the whole day. Dramas during the third run of restricted put us back 45 minutes, after Cheryl Hargreaves Golden Retriever bitch, Toia, became entangled in a rope she decided to grab in her mouth. With Toia going in circles and her legs becoming more entwined, she was gradually sinking and in desperate need of assistance. To the rescue, and diving fully clothed into the lake, went Zoe Slights and Heather Ellis, who swam out to Toia and disentangled her and brought her to shore. It was extremely cold in and out of the water, and hats off to the two girls for braving the water and rescuing Toia from certain drowning. Apart from that excitement, the day went very smoothly. Thanks to Dave Henderson, Caroline Read and Donna Blackman who stewarded the whole day; it was very much appreciated.

Congratulations to the GRCWA for holding its first trial in so many years. With so many Goldens competing in WA I must confess that I hadn't appreciated that the club wasn't supporting these events.
Well done to Heather and Zoe for their lifesaving efforts. Certainly sounds like a bit of drama.
