Submitted for the GSP Club of SA Inc.

Celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, the GSPCSA’s Poldea Plate (awarded to the winner of the All Age stake) was most fittingly won by Rick Johnson and his GSP bitch Rt Ch Inkaline Phoebe, amongst a very strong field of mostly Labrador retrievers. Local favourite (and retrieving Hall of Famer) Ray Ashenden came a close second with his Labrador dog Rt Ch Nativerun Angus CM.

As trial manager, running a dog in Novice and stewarding for the Restricted stake, I was not able to see any of the All Age dogs run, however our judge from Queensland, Elio Colasimone stated that he was most impressed with the quality of dog work that he oversaw.

Thank you to John Nairn for acting as a dedicated game steward for the day. With Elio being both a Retrieving Trial and Field Trial competitor and judge, and a hunter with his own GSPs, I’m sure that working under him would have been a most valuable and enlightening experience. Thank you also to Gail Phoenix for gun stewarding for the All Age stake.

The design of the Novice and Restricted runs were a collaboration between the two judges, with Lynne Webster judging the Novice Stake and Tor Bakkeland judging Restricted. The concurrent running of both stakes ensured we always had adequate stewards for each run, with Novice competitors having the benefit of viewing how runs can be built up, from one level to the next. This arrangement seemed to work well.

Thank you to competitors for pitching in to assist with various stewarding duties when required, and thank you also to Malcolm Dunn for providing an off-road ferry service with his little all-terrain vehicle to transport gear, and occasionally stewards and the judges, over some rather slushy ground. The back of this little vehicle also afforded the judges an elevated platform to view dogs performing in their final water runs.

There was only one survivor in Tor’s Restricted stake, the well-performed Ch Magicland Mighty Mouse NRD, a Labrador dog owned by Paula Davidson, however Lynne managed to get almost all of her competitors through Novice, which was won by Labrador bitch Kadlinga Dot Dot Dash, very ably handled by Julie Kradolfer.

I am also pleased to report that again, amongst an almost-all Labrador field, my own GSP dog, Ch Oakridge Waldemar, was able to fly the breed flag on the day by attaining 2nd in the Novice stake. Full results of all stakes appear elsewhere in this report - congratulations to you all.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the catering team. Thankfully for our GSP trial, we had the use of a very well-equipped near-new shearing shed (courtesy of the Verco family), where BBQ lunches were served, together with hot and cold drinks and delicious cup cakes.

The weather for the day was mostly fine, however it was a welcome reprieve to be able to escape the elements at lunch time. A huge thank you to Dean (on the BBQ), Margaret, Rebecca and her two little trainee-caterers for facilitating Saturday’s lunches, and then Margaret, Rebecca and Carolyn for braving the elements and providing on-site hot-food catering on Sunday for the RAFTCOSA trial. Unable to attend the trial, Kristen and Drew had slaved over a hot oven for several nights to provide 3 huge boxes of cupcakes, which were enjoyed both days. Many thanks to you all - everyone was most appreciative of your efforts.

After several COVID-affected years, it was nice to be able to run a near-normal trial, and see a good increase in entries from the previous year. I was pleased to have been able to secure the services of 3 very well respected judges for our 50th anniversary year trial, and thank them for their efforts.

Thank you to Jessie for designing and collating our catalogue, and Lynne for organising place cards. A special thank you to Pieter Zaadstra for his kind permission to use one of his paintings (an image of Elio and several of his GSPs) on the cover of our catalogue this year, and to our sponsors, Black Hawk and Kaesler Wines (the latter of whom very generously stepped in at the last moment to assist us), and last but not least, the property owners, for without them we would be unable to run trials at all.
