‘Chasa’ owned and bred by Charlie and Lucille Ball was born on the 14th January 1967. A
little over six years old he died on the 17th February 1973 following a tragic accident on Duck
Opening day 1973. ‘Chasa’ was buried where he died on the bank of the Jimaringle Creek
near Wakool, N.S.W.

‘Chasa’ started his competitive career in 20th August 1967 at a Retrieving Trial in South
Australia. He was seven months old and he won the Novice and Open Stakes. This had only
been done once before by a Victorian dog and has not been done since.

Two months later ‘Chasa’ won another Open Stake, this win at the age of nine months and
thirteen days made him a Retrieving Trial Champion. Possibly the youngest dog ever to
achieve this title. It was evident that ‘Chasa’ was destined for a very successful career in
Retrieving Trials.

In 1970 ‘Chasa’ won his first Spaniel and Retriever Field Trial. The same year he won the
Victorian Field Trial Championship thus gaining him the title of Field Trial Champion.

‘Chasa’ in his comparatively short career won a total of twenty seven events and was placed
sixteen times in trials covering the States of Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales.
‘Chasa’ won the NSW Retrieving Trial Championship in 1969 and 1971. Was runner-up in
the Victorian Retrieving Trial Championship of 1968 and third in the Championship of 1971.
Runner-up in the South Australian Retrieving Trial Championship of 1970 and 1971 and
winner of the event in 1972. ‘Chasa’ won five Open Stakes and thirteen All Age Stakes for
Retrieving Trials.

In 1970 ‘Chasa’ won the Victorian Field Trial Championship for Spaniel and Retrievers and
two months later won the Australian Open Retrieving Trial Championship, possibly his most
memorable performance, winning by fifty points. It was one of the early predecessors to what
is now the National Retrieving Trial Championship. A total of thirty eight top retrievers
competed with stiff competition coming from Western Australia, South Australia, New South
Wales, and Victoria.

The Perpetual and Annual Trophies ‘Chasa’ won included the Victorian Gundog Club “Field
Trial Dog of the Year” in 1970, and the “Retrieving Trial Dog of the Year” in 1969, 1970, and
1971.

‘Chasa’ won the Labrador Retriever Club of Victoria, “Robertshore Panther Trophy” for Field
and Retrieving Trials in 1968, 1970, and 1971.
The “Rosemoor Rajah Trophy” for Field and Retrieving Trials in 1968 for dogs under two
years old. The “Woambra Trophy” that covers Field Trials, Retrieving Trials, and Show events
was won by ‘Chasa’ in 1968.

Truly a remarkable record for a working dog so young. A credit to his breed.
‘Chasa’ enjoyed his work immensely and was always a pleasure to watch at trials, even on
the rare occasion when he was not performing so well, you could not help but see he was
trying to do his best and please his owner. I had the pleasure to judge ‘Chasa’ and compete
against him at many trials, and the added privilege of spending many Saturdays in the field
shooting with Charlie and ‘Chasa’s’ company.
